Legion purchases poles for Avenue of Flags
The Avenue of Flags at Marion Cemetery is an impressive sight during the annual Memorial Day weekend.
Sponsored by James William Miesse Post 22 of the American Legion, the avenue is put in place each year for the enjoyment of all. Each flag represents a deceased former serviceman or woman.
The old poles, however, are getting difficult to install and they bend in the breeze.
So, officers of the Marion Legion post have voted to replace the flimsy poles with sturdy ones which will remain in place throughout the year.
Fifty-five new poles have been purchased from the Henry Helgerson Co. of Wichita. They will be installed by Memorial Day.
The new poles are 20 feet tall, of one piece construction, three inches diameter at the base and tapered to two inches at the top where there will be a gold ball.
Legion officers who went to Wichita to purchase the new poles were Rosse Case, Forrest Smith, Ed Sandwell, and Roger "Bud" Hannaford.
