Leland Weber

Leland Weber, 85, died Feb. 11, 2002, at St. Luke Hospital.

Born Dec. 1, 1916, at Eagle City, Okla., he was the son of George and Amelia (Bauer) Weber.

He spent most of his childhood in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. For a while, he lived with his brother and sister-in-law, George and Leah Weber, and attended Dobbs school northwest of Marion. He also attended grade school in Marion.

In November 1939, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Riley.

He married Lois Bell on Nov. 12, 1941, in Junction City. They lived there until 1943 when he was sent to Camp Polk, La. From there he was sent overseas and served in the European Theater of World War II until he returned home in October 1945.

He was employed at Ford Motor Company in Marion as a mechanic until 1952 when he went to work for Riddle Quarries, then stayed on when Hallett Construction bought the quarry. He worked 23 years there until his retirement in 1978.

He was a life member of Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer VFW Post #6958.

An avid sportsman, hunting and fishing were his favorite sports, sharing this knowledge with his children and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors and he and his wife raised a garden every year.

The 13th child of the family, he was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Julia, Susie, Anna, and Elizabeth; eight brothers, Alvin, Ezra, Dan, Victor, George, Charlie, Alex, and Eddie; and a son, Robert, who died in 1967.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; son, Gary of Annandale, Va.; two daughters, Barbara Thomas of Euless, Texas, and Margaret Hett of Marion; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Zeiner Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. John Yates officiating.

Casket bearers are Doug Hett, Tony Hett, Troy Hett, Jeffrey Thomas, Doug Cusick, and David Harder.

Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with St. Luke Hospital Surgical Department.
