Leonard Hancock
Leonard Hancock, 86, of Herington, died Sept. 26, 2006, at Geary Community Hospital in Junction City.
Born April 12, 1920, in St. Austell, Cornwall, England, he was the son of Robert and Ethel Louise (Dyer) Hancock.
He was a machinist for Ingersol in Rockford, Ill., retiring in 1985.
Prior to moving to the U.S. in 1968, he served 20 years as a chief petty officer in the British Royal Navy, then worked for National Cash Registrar in Dundee, Scotland.
He was an active member of Herington Kiwanis Club, serving as a past president, and Herington Senior Center. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Herington. He loved to sing and sang in the church choir, the Herington Community Choir, at jam sessions, and led singing for the Kiwanis Club.
His hobby was building model ships and he made presentations about them at local elementary schools. He assisted with reading programs and provided coaching sessions of British football (soccer).
Preceded in death by his wife, Helen, who died Nov. 28, 1997, he was the last survivor of four brothers, Fred, his twin, Tom, Robert Jr., and William, and a sister, Bette.
Survivors include a daughter, Maureen Obermeyer of Herington; two sons, Errol Hancock of Devon, Alberta, Canada, and Michael Hancock of Sydney, Australia; nine grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 29, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herington, with Rev. John Gerry officiating. Burial was at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.
The family requests memorials, in lieu of flowers, be made to the church and Herington Elementary School Library.
