Let's not wait until it's too late

Spring has sprung. The school year is nearing the end. Summer is approaching. This means more pedestrians and bicyclists on the streets; particularly children.

I know living in a small community has its benefits. We all look out for each other and for each other's children.

However, lately I am seeing more children carelessly riding their bikes and playing in the streets.

First of all, they automatically assume I see them. Secondly, they assume I am going to give them the right of way as they ride from one side of the street to the other or run out to get a ball.

I still have pretty good reflexes and eyesight. An older person may not react as quickly.

Parents, please, please, please, talk with your children. Police officers, I know you already do this, but take the time to talk to children.

If you see a child you know repeatedly behave in a careless manner, talk to the parents.

We don't need to police our children for safety's sake, we just need to let our children know they are a valuable part of our world and we don't want harm to come to them.

It seems to be human nature to wait until something horrible happens before helmets are worn and lectures are given to our children. Let's not wait until that happens.
