Letter: Concealed weapons

To the Editor:

In trying to decide on issues of social concern, I am always interested in hearing facts to help me decide on the best policy.

In an earlier editorial, Bill Meyer stated that if concealed carry of firearms were passed in Kansas there would be fear concerning gunfights in our streets.

Right now in Kansas the only people carrying concealed firearms are criminals and licensed hunters. I have never known a concealed carrying licensed hunter ever to be provoked into a gunfight. The only people I fear are criminals who know they have no resistance from law-abiding citizens.

Right now there are 45 states that have passed some form of concealed carry. I would be interested in Mr. Meyer's data that indicates an abundance of gunfights from licensed concealed carrying citizens in those states. I also am wondering why Mr. Meyer does not trust a trained, law abiding Kansas citizen to carry a licensed concealed firearm?
