It takes a community
To the Editor:
I would like to thank all the businesses who sponsored a Marion REC basketball team. Boys and girls from third through sixth grade made 10 teams from Marion. Some of these kids would have traveled to Newton every Saturday to play basketball. However, by having a league here, we were able to bring other kids and their families to Marion.
A huge thank you needs to go out to Margo Yates for getting the basketball league started here in town. She does an excellent job trying to provide a variety of activities for our kids through the REC program. She always is thinking of our kids and our community. She works endless hours above and beyond normal work schedules. To make one activity come together there is a lot of behind-the-scene preparation. You always can find Margo behind the scene. I want to thank you, Margo, for all your hard work and dedication to this community. I encourage others to show their appreciation as well.
I also would like to thank the schools for allowing these kids to practice and play in the gyms each week. I know it made extra work for some people, but the kids enjoyed learning and playing the game. I hope that outweighs the extra work. We could not have had a league if we did not have the support of our schools.
Last, but not least, I would like to thank the students who gave up Saturdays, their free time, to referee. High school and college students gave up time out of their busy lives to referee for our kids. Those who helped were Allison Maddox, Toni Gordon, Emalee Versch, Jared Hett, Tyler Stubenhofer, Farai Mukwindidza, Joel Versch, Brian Bina, Alan Vogel, and Stacia Williams. All of you made a difference in these kids' lives. Thank you for supporting our kids and our community.
It took the businesses, the city, the school, the students, as well as parent-coaches to make this come together. We need to work together more often to continue to make this the best place to live.
