Vet responds
via 'open letter'
To the Editor:
This is in response to John Sandwell's open letter to American Legion commander Bud Hannaford last week.
My friend and fellow WWII veteran Ed Sandwell shared his time, energy, and talents to promote patriotism through active service in the American Legion.
Let me assure all that there was no intent to slight him, nor to overlook his efforts. Ed was a D-Day veteran, highly regarded and respected.
I apologize for any misunderstanding that occurred.
The problem, John, is that there are too few WWII and Korean veterans remaining. Vietnam and later vets have not stepped forward as your dad did to promote patriotism and remember those who served.
Too many of the old guys, like me, are infirm and too many of the young guys don't give a damn.
Too many think patriotism is playing bingo or having a drink at the bar.
The lack of action was due to too few volunteers to do a job that's becoming larger every year.
