LETTERS: Coach says thanks
To the Editor:
I'd like to take this opportunity to say a public thank-you to the fans of the Marion High School girls' basketball team. I appreciated the following you gave the girls this year!
It was nice to take a quick peek at the stands just before tip-off and see them regularly filled. The following we had for our brief post-season stint at Hillsboro was outstanding. I know you saw some fine young ladies play some very fine basketball this year.
Didn't you just love their pressure defense that was a routine feature? Their fastbreaks were so much fun to watch and coach when the kids were in their groove.
Who can forget the tournament game at Berean against Douglass when the girls scored 94 points, or the game against Sacred Heart in Marion when the girls were vying for a piece of the CVL title? The Sacred Heart coach told me the girls were the toughest team they played until they reached post-season.
I came into this season thinking we had a shot at making it to the state playoffs. I knew in order to make it there, we would have to have a little providence find its way onto our team and it did when we received the sub-state pairings. I knew we would have to fire on all cylinders every night once we started the short post-season, but, that's why teams make it to the championship night.
Folks, I don't know how many times I told the girls that they were so close to being great this year, but it was many. That wasn't a bunch of hype I was using to try to motivate the girls, but my honest evaluation of where they were in terms of potential. Apparently I wasn't the only person who felt that way as Hesston scouted us three times just prior to our trip to Hillsboro in the sub-state tournament.
The season ended a little prematurely but I guess that sometimes goes with the territory. I still believe we were capable of going to Hutchinson. I always will.
Thank you once again for your attendance and plan on next year because we have a mission to accomplish!
I'd also like to publicly thank all those people who have helped our program this year: the parents, bus drivers, timers and scorekeepers, custodial staff, secretaries, TV crew, cheerleading squad, pep band, statisticians, managers, athletic director, school staff for their encouragement throughout the season, and my assistant, Randy Savage.
