LETTERS: Comment offended
To the Editor:
Last week when Matthew Classen made his infamous statement [to a reporter] that you folks are not touched by the war around there, it is just everyday life, and someone else will press on, he obviously did not realize the gravity of his statements.
Only a blind, deaf mute could say that. For the mere fact that he has the freedom to keep his head in the clouds nonchalantly drinking coffee, he should visit his local VFW, thank them and do something for them.
Can he hold a pen and write a letter to any Service person? Does he stand and remove his hat for the colors? Does he fly a flag to which he pledges allegiance? He must be affected in some way! He needs to find out who in that town does have family and friends there and see how he can support them.
The third graders get it, the people who made the banner for the park get it, the Legion people get it. Please, all of you, help Mr. Classen to get it.
Mrs. LtC. Gary L. Brickler, U.S. Army Reserves (for Dr. Gary L. Brickler deployed July 1, 2002, soon in Iraq. He gets it — 24/7!!)
Editor's Note: This is an example of how remarks made in casual conversation often don't seem the same in print. Matt Classen meant no disrespect for our troops nor that we on the home front are not concerned.
