LETTERS: Don't deface Flint Hills

Dear Marion County friends:

I thought you might be interested in the following message to our California Representatives in the U.S. Congress. The wind generators referred to by Jim Hoy are 350 to 600 feet tall, are as big as a Greyhound bus, and are anchored in 600,000 pounds of concrete. There would be thousands of them in each location. Here is the message:

July 5, 2002

Congressman Chris Cox

Senator Barbara Boxer

Senator Dianne Feinstein

Dear Representatives in Congress,

I just read an article titled, "Blowing in the Wind" by Jim Hoy in the June 26 Marion County Record. The article is enclosed and discusses a plan to deface one of the more beautiful places in our country with an impractical means of generating power.

I imagine that they have picked Flint Hills, Kansas, because there are so few people there to oppose it. This of course is only the tip of the iceberg. Once they get in there the next step will be to plant these monstrosities in other cherished places such as Yosemite, Mount Rushmore, and Yellowstone.

To see how bad these "wind energy farms" are, have a look for yourself by taking a ride along U.S.-10 outside Palm Springs. Wind and solar power require 50 square mile sites in order to generate the same amount of power as a conventional power plant can on only 75 acres. How many 50 square mile sites do we have available around the country?

Flint Hills is one of the most beautiful places in the country. A memorial to one of our American icons, Knute Rockne, is located there. A picture of a portion of the Flint Hills taken from the Year 2002 VFW calendar is enclosed to give you an idea of the beauty of the place. Where will they try to go next?
