LETTERS: Meyer paid his dues

To the Editor:

Ro and I send you our deepest sympathy on the loss of Bill. We know this sudden turn of events must be shocking to you. Yet, he had more than his share of illnesses so the Lord decided to give him succor and peace. Another white cross signals the departure of one of the "boys" who raised the stop sign to the spread of dictatorship. The price they paid lasted them beyond immediate death, or through their lifetime.

We both know that Bill would welcome a sudden, painless death. I can't imagine him spending day after day hooked up to hoses, machines and wires. He is now at peace, protected from pain.

Bill contributed much so that it can really be said, "He paid his dues." Be it military, the editor of an outstanding community newspaper, his university, and his state. His role in Marion went far beyond the publication for he let you know where he was coming from and he did not waiver if he took incoming flak for his views.

I used to think he really got a chuckle out of riling the community waters! Readers might not agree with him, but they could not argue that his positions were not well written and with keen logic.

So, I hope the Old Soldier, having well fought the job well done, now goes to a peaceful bivouac where the roar of the cannons of life bring him eternal peace.

We send you our prayers and join in your sorrow.

Ro and Ed Wheeler
