LETTERS: Please vote 'yes'

To the Editor:

Our mayor wanted the public to know the facts about landfill requirements for a type D landfill. We had a meeting with the Kansas State authority. The whole operation would have to be approved by the state and a permit, applied for and granted, before a landfill could be started.

We were told by the persons from KDHE that if a permit for a landfill was granted and established that KDHE would check the operation at certain times during the year.

The concerns of people at the meeting were water pollution and contamination and that KDHE would not check the operation enough, both incoming trash and operation after it was deposited.

KDHE said their manpower was limited and suggested very strongly that the rules pertaining to inspection could be more and we could require the operator of the landfill to have full time inspections.

Our mayor and two previous mayors have been for the landfill and this will be good for Marion. Also the economic impact for the community is substantial plus negotiations for the closing of the old landfill can be done saving more money. I am a new member of the community and from what I see it is a plus for the community but it is up to us to see that it is done safely and correctly.

Please vote yes on the landfill issue.
