LETTERS: Purpose of government
To the Editor:
There is a lot of talk about how our communities are in demise and need to be revitalized. This is my response.
Isn't it enough that we are being robbed every day of our will and means to provide for ourselves? Is it then for government to encourage outside investment and companies to locate in our community, only to do the same to them? If you think it is not so, try to build on or improve your lot. Who is there but the regulator and appraiser!
So bring in corporate America, so we all have jobs. Take away private enterprise. How does that save the family farm and independent businesses? If government's goal is to revitalize the local economy from the inside out, then stop taxing us and controlling and regulating us. Let us be productive.
Isn't economic development all about expanding the tax base? Does government create wealth? How does it benefit us? By robbing from us? Do we ever think that we are getting something without paying? Shouldn't the responsibility of government be to protect my right to invest, work, and manage my affairs to provide for myself, not to take it away through taxes and fees to pay itself and give to those who don't? Seems it would be wiser to tell them that the benefits they receive come from those who are working to provide for themselves, and the government has no wealth except what they stole from us.
Think! What does government do to earn anything? If we would be honest with ourselves, we would see that the sole purpose of government is to take total control. Didn't we immigrants come here so we could be self-governing and have control of our lives? In the beginning, the government was subject to the people. Now we have become subject to the government. Every nation rises and then falls when it makes its people servants. Only people can create wealth and well being. All government can do is take wealth from the people to rule over them! Why is government needing more and more money? Because it has taken from the people that which is their responsibility. If there is no responsibility, there is no reward. It's not there to help, but to rule!
First, you hire an economic development director for big bucks, then hire someone to do a feasibility study. For what? The government! Isn't it about people's wealth? Why not let us keep what we work for. Then we would all be better off!
