LETTERS: Thanks for support

To the Editor:

Many thanks to Joan Winter and Margie Sandwell for spearheading the "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS" celebration at Central Park. Approximately 70 flag-waving loyal citizens appreciated their hard work. The many names listed on the large yellow banner represent servicemen and women of families who live in Marion County.

This celebration was to show support for our troops who are serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Only three percent of the population of Marion and less than one percent of the population of Marion County chose to show their support. Regardless of how we feel about war, our nation is at war with over 80 percent of American approval. Saturday was a day to show our approval and support for the servicemen and women.

Are we living in a community with "horse blinders" on? The outcome with Iraq, Afghanistan, the al-Qaida and even the World Trade Center and the Pentagon DOES impact Marion, Marion County, and Kansas. In our little community, do we sometimes take our freedoms too lightly? Church, schools, speech, voting, the ability to fill the gas tanks of our cars and farm machinery, plenty of food to eat and water to drink, jobs to support us, and school activities in which to participate — to name a few.

These young servicemen and women we honored Saturday have "stepped forward" so we may keep these freedoms for our generation and their children's generation. They and their families deserve the support of our nation, and yes, of Marion and Marion County.
