Nurture our town
To the Editor:
A town is like a garden. You nurture it so it grows with lovely flowers and buds ready to open. If you ignore the problems the flowers may have or expect someone else to care for it — it dies. It takes a lot of work to have a beautiful garden with many varieties of flowers to pick and enjoy.
The same is true with our town. Many buildings are empty or torn down, sitting on Main Street looking like dead flowers.
The time has come for everyone to plant new seeds and nourish our town. Patronize our existing businesses and use innovative ways to encourage new ones.
As Contrary Mary was asked, "How does your garden grow?" I think the citizens of Marion could answer "with lofty ideas, hard work, and a 'can-do' attitude."

Bring back football
To the Editor:
It has been brought to my attention that there is no home football game for Old Settlers' Day. What lack of forethought went into this decision? I am going to my 15-year class reunion, and was making plans to be there Friday night to watch the Warriors play football. But this now will not happen. What fool plans these events? Perhaps they can organize a Fourth of July parade in August. That makes as much sense as no football or homecoming on OSD.
Each week I read the Marion County Record and watch in amazement how the county is slipping away from common sense and into a battleground between those with common sense and those without. Well, it appears those without have set up the OSD weekend.
Bring back football to OSD!

Editors Note: Old Settlers' Day is traditionally the last Saturday in September. High school football games are scheduled by Kansas State High School Activities Association.
Generosity appreciated
To The Editor:
I've had an amazing opportunity this past week to witness some incredible things. I'm so grateful to work for a company (Golden Heritage Foods in Hillsboro) with very strong Christian core values. One of those core values is "To reflect God's will and purpose in all relationships through the Christian values of honesty, integrity, respect, and servanthood."
I witnessed "servanthood" this week as our company pulled together to organize a huge opportunity for our communities to help the victims of hurricane Katrina.
Within 48 hours I saw an idea turn into reality as three trucks were loaded with items of immediate need to go to Baton Rouge, La. Golden Heritage team members and local pastors gathered in our parking lot to pray before the trucks left. Golden Heritage Foods team members and people and businesses of our communities banded together to do their part to make it happen.
I sat at my desk this week in tears as I witnessed people wanting to make a difference. I want to thank the community for your generosity and Golden Heritage Foods team members for being willing to serve where possible.
