LETTERS: Tournament was outstanding

To the Editor:

My wife and I had the privilege as Babe Ruth Baseball officials of being a part of the just completed Kansas District IV Cal Ripken 12 and Under baseball tournament in Marion. The tournament featured Cal Ripken League baseball teams from the Central Kansas area who were vying for a berth in the 2002 Cal Ripken State Tournament of Champions.

The tournament organizers did an excellent job of conducting an exciting and fair tournament. Sean Spoontz, tournament director, and the many volunteers at the tournament are to be commended for their outstanding job of putting on a quality tournament! Not only was baseball the spotlight during the weekend, but sportsmanship and team play were promoted throughout. It was evident that all who participated and attended this event had a good time, witnessed some excellent baseball, and left Marion with fond memories.

The city of Marion can be proud of the Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken Baseball programs in Marion. Many hours of volunteer work are necessary to provide a quality baseball program for youth. It is evident that these volunteers' investments are paying great dividends.
