LETTERS: Volunteer treasurers

To the Editor:

As former library treasurers, we support a board-member treasurer policy. Having a paid treasurer during the expensive, more complicated building period made sense. But as things settle into a routine we have to oppose it.

The board works closely with the librarian and is on top of all library activities and expenses, and each item must be approved. Books, periodicals, office supplies, and all other expenses must be justified. Vouchers are prepared and each check must have two signatures — the president's and treasurer's.

Money from the city for the library is received routinely. In turn, monthly library treasurer's reports are available to the city.

Library treasurers must be bonded. The books are professionally audited annually. There have been no problems.

The library board treasurer's job has been successfully done by willing, dedicated, capable volunteers. To fund one more paid city employee job, smacks as another power-play by "city hall."

Volunteerism strengthens a community.
