LETTERS: What good is the law?

To the Editor:

Kansas law restricts late-term abortions to women whose lives and health are in danger. There is strong evidence that Dr. George Tiller has performed abortions that violate this law.

For some reason, our governor, attorney general, and State Supreme Court are doing everything possible to hamper a grand jury investigation of Dr. Tiller. These officials are stating that patient privacy rights are more important than the law, even though the patients' names will never be mentioned.

If it is true that patient privacy rights are important, then why are the patients (some of whom have been publicly identified) of Dr. Schneider of Haysville being investigated for possible drug abuse?

Only patients of Dr. Tiller are allowed this privacy. Could it be that Dr. Tiller has immunity from investigation because he has contributed handsomely to the political campaigns of elected officials?

If Tiller is not investigated, then we have become a lawless, unjust society in which the rich are allowed to break the law with no consequences. If a law is not enforced, what good is the law?
