Library sees growth during first year
This week marks the first year anniversary of Marion City Library's move to the renovated former Santa Fe depot. The facility was dedicated July 15, 2002.
Circulation averaged 3,198 books per month, the busiest two months being August 2002, 4,096, and June 2003 4,384.
Librarian Janet Marler reports that 250 new families have applied for library cards and more than 200 guests have visited the library, coming from 16 states.
The library conducted numerous special activities during the year. They included:
Robert Collins, Kansas author who talked about trains
Frances Turner, handwriting analyst
Children's Book Week with miniature train display
Sponsor of Christmas Home Tours
Quilt display
Homer Socolofsky book collection dedication and reception
Fred Harvey program
Grandmother's Garden program
Harry Potter book party
Scholastic book fair
Summer reading program
Old Settlers' Day float and tours
Host to North Central Kansas Librarians director's meeting
Program about attracting and feeding birds
Mystery tour
Story times for children
Additions include film on windows to reduce light and heat, bike rack, flag and pole, and three new children's computers for learning programs.
Vickie Kraus and Amy Rasmussen were hired as new staff members.
Marler said many memorials and gifts have been received by the library. They supplement the book budget.
Future plans include:
— replacing metal shelving with wooden shelves in the Kansas Room to match the existing woodwork. Shelves will be made when memorials and special donations provide funds.
— installing Microsoft Office program on computers for public use.
— expanding existing genealogy information.
"I can't believe we've already been here a year," Marler said. "It's been a good year."
Those who have not yet visited the library are invited to do so. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
