Local teams fall just short of tourney titles
Two area baseball teams competed this past weekend in tournaments, and had their their seasons end in dramatic fashion.
The 16-18-year-old Babe Ruth team based out of Hillsboro, known during the regular season as Post 366, was 1-2 in the state tournament after sweeping through the district tournament.
Hillsboro (24-3) advanced to the second round Saturday after a 4-2, nine-inning victory against host Garden City.
Calvin Jeffrey of Marion was named the MVP of the game and Cole Starkey of Cottonwood Falls earned the WOW award.
The team was knocked out after a pair of 5-4 losses, one that lasted 10 innings, to Galena/ Riverton and Cimarron River.
Tyler Ediger of Hillsboro was the MVP for the Galena/ Riverton game, and Travis Riesen, also of Hillsboro, won the WOW award.
Brian Fruechting of Marion won the MVP in the Cimarron loss, while Jeffrey, Fruechting, and Kyle Hannigan of Cottonwood Falls shared the WOW award.
The CVL 13-year-old team also went 1-2 this past weekend in the District 4 tournament.
CVL played Mid-Kansas National all three games and came away with a victory in game one, 13-12.
Caleb Williams and Christian Larson, both of Marion, won the MVP and WOW awards.
CVL again played Mid-Kansas in the championship round.
Mid-Kansas then defeated CVL 22-7 and 15-5.
Ethan Hett of Marion earned the MVP of game one, and Hunter Scott of Cottonwood Falls was the WOW winner.
Scott earned MVP in the final game, and Colton Jeffrey of Marion earned the WOW award.
