In spite of the hard rain Oct. 2, Don and Norma Bird drove to Salina where they had dinner, then attended a movie in celebration of their 46th anniversary. They weren't so happy when they came home and found water running alongside a wall in their dining room and between the kitchen and enclosed porch. Roofers had placed heavy roofing paper over the roof after tearing all the shingles off, thinking it would keep the rain from penetrating. The Birds put in a call to the roofer and showed him what was taking place. The roofers worked in the hard rain to fix the problem.
Jakob Hanschu of Hillsboro spent from Saturday to Sunday with his grandparents, Junior and Jeanetta Hanschu. His brother, Jorge, stayed with great-grandparents, Fred and Marguerite Utech.
The rain we got Wednesday and Thursday is something to remember. We had five inches. The wind did some damage. Betty Ohm said it broke off a large limb that fell on the peppers in her garden. It broke a tree at Reznicek's, picked up a trampoline at Terry Deines', and picked up a heavy picnic table at Bob Makovec's. We had hail at 3 a.m. Sunday and very little rain. It didn't last long and I believe it did no damage to the crops.
Gloria Alana Huffman of Dyersburg, Tenn., visited Junior and Jeanetta Hanschu Saturday evening. Gloria is staying for a week with her cousin, Edna Mueller of Tampa.
Ruby Holub of Marion treated Bob and Irma Reznicek and Ruby's niece, Angie of Mexico, to dinner Sunday noon at Butch's Café, Tampa. Ruby and her niece visited at the Reznicek home in the afternoon.
Larry Rudolph stopped in Saturday to get the size of the rim and tire of my car. When I had a flat tire a week ago, Douglas found that the rim to my spare in the trunk was too large. Larry brought a spare tire Sunday evening that fits my car. He stayed for supper.
Douglas Strecker of Hesston sowed the wheat Tuesday and fixed the electric fencer the deer tear up in my pasture. He was my dinner guest.
Mervin and Leona Deines attended the Phillip Deines family reunion Sunday at the Lincolnville Community Building. Marvin said there were 56 that enjoyed the potluck diner and fellowship.
Betty Stenzel accompanied Gregory Stenzel and daughter Nikki to Lincolnville Saturday to attend the Octoberfest. Nikki marched in the Centre band during the parade.
Esther Utech Cole, 81, of Ottawa, died Sunday and her funeral was Wednesday at the Lutheran church in Ottawa. Esther was a sister of Fred and Eric Utech and Edna Mueller.
Kenny Stuchlik of Towanda and Monty Stuchlik were Wednesday dinner guests of Frances Stuchlik. Kenny was helping Monty sow wheat.
I had a nice visit Friday with Evelyn Anderson of Marion. Her late husband Stanley and my late husband used to live a mile apart west of Marion and went to grade school together in the country.
Alex and Jean Stuchlik went to the Octoberfest in Lincolnville Saturday. Alex's band played in the afternoon.
