Lost Springs: Texas weather warmer than Kansas

My cousin, Leona Jones, of Mission, Texas, called me Wednesday. She said it was 60 degrees and wanted to know what the weather was in Kansas. I told her we had ice and lots of snow. She said that Thursday she was going to mow her lawn. When it blew Sunday, I looked out the window watching the snow drift near the stock tank and filling up my tracks and places where I had shoveled the snow. I thought "I wish I was eight years old instead of 88." I would make an igloo and tunnels. Oh yes, and a snowman. With friends we could play "fox and geese," and other games in the snow.

Harlan Schlesener died Dec. 31 at the age of 72. Mervin Deines and Junior Hanschu attended the funeral Feb. 2 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shadybrook. Our sympathy to Margie (Miller) Schlesener and family.

Sorry to hear, too, that Lizetta Stout's husband Stanley died Saturday. The funeral is Wednesday at the Lutheran church in McPherson. Lizetta is the daughter of the late George Deines. Our sympathy to Lizetta and her family.

Mervin Deines attended the funeral of Margie Nienstedt at Marion Christian Church on Saturday. Our sympathy to her family.

Selma Ingram accompanied her daughter, Adele Katz, to Hillsboro Thursday where they visited Adele's daughter, Lori Smithhart.

Frances Stuchlik told me her son-in-law, Stanley Sharping of Wichita, is in critical condition after having surgery Thursday and Friday for cancer. Her son, Monty Stuchlik, took her Friday and Saturday to St. Joseph hospital to be near Stanley.

Fred and Marguerite Utech accompanied Junior and Jeanetta Hanschu Saturday morning to McPherson where they watched Jakob Hanschu wrestle in the high school auditorium. Jakob is the son of Jayson and Jan Hanschu, Hillsboro. After dinner, they drove to Windom to visit with Jeff and Jennifer Braden and Joshua.

Albina Libal is a resident at St. Luke Living Center in Marion. Albina will have a birthday this month. It would be nice to remember her 90th birthday with cards.

Mervin and Leona Deines drove to Manhattan Sunday afternoon to watch the Kansas State women's basketball team play the Colorado women's team. Kansas State won.

Fred and Marguerite Utech and Sally Utech of Lawrence accompanied Junior and Jeanetta Hanschu Sunday afternoon to Trinity Lutheran Church, Salina, for a pancake feed. After the feed they went to the home of Neil and Jolene Albrecht and Kallie to celebrate Jan Hanschu, Jolene Albrecht, and Junior Hanschu's birthdays. Additional guests were Jayson and Jan Hanschu, Jakob and Jorge of Hillsboro and Jeff and Jennifer Braden and Joshua of Windom. They had cake and ice cream for dessert.

Larry Rudolph stopped Jan. 31 to ask me if I needed any groceries. When he returned at 3 p.m. the road was icy.

Since I was not able to get my mail for three days, I called Diane Ecklund, letter carrier, Wednesday and told her my concern about not receiving mail. Thursday afternoon, Randy Kahns, letter carrier, brought my mail to the house. Thanks, Randy. Junior Hanschu warned me this morning it was icy and to be careful when mailing my news.

Selma Ingram took care of her granddaughter, Tia, Saturday.

Marilyn Stuchlik of Newton was surprised Saturday night when a group of relatives and friends celebrated her 60th birthday at Eagle Claw Cabin, Newton. Monty and Sarah Stuchlik and Frances Stuchlik were there to help her celebrate.
