Lucretia Winkley

Lucretia A. Winkley, 87, died Jan. 6, 2004, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center.

Born May 27, 1916, at the family home near Florence, she was the daughter of Martin and Lula (Cullins) Waner.

She was raised in the Florence community and graduated from Florence High School. She went on to Emporia then to Friends University at Wichita where she received her teaching degree.

Her first teaching job was in 1936, teaching at District #55 in Marion County. She taught first grade in Peabody from 1947-1952. She also taught in Wichita and Derby and her last teaching assignment was at Andover, where she retired in May 1973.

On May 27, 1940, she married Joe William Winkley. He died in 1968.

She married Sylvester Winkley at Wichita on Sept. 14, 1973. He died in 1993.

She was a member of Holy Family Parish of Marion County and also attended church in Newton. She was a life member of the National Education Association (NEA), a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a 30-year member of an extension unit, and served for 25 years with St. Mark's Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and a brother, Claude Waner in 1989.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lucy Lea and Larry Schwart of Peabody; a sister, Gertrude Mahoney of Newton; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Gertrude Mahoney was the rosary leader.

A Mass of Resurrection was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Parish, St. Patrick's Church, Florence, with Father John Hotze as celebrant.

Janice Waner was lector. Roger and Dorothy Hoffman and Vernon and Henrietta Waner were gift bearers. Servers were Neil and Nick Waner. Bobby Richmond and John Waner were ushers.

Music was provided by vocalist Greg Carlson and organist Wanda Williams.

Casket bearers were Scott Schwart, Tony Schwart, Kelly Tiffany, Walter Rooney, Brad Elliott, and Leon Richmond.

Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Florence.

Memorial funds were established with Mount Calvary Cemetery and the National Kidney Foundation.
