Man donates ponytail for kids hairpieces

David Silhan of Marion let his brown hair grow for four years. He had a good reason. Thursday evening, he had 10 inches of his ponytail lopped off, so that he and his wife, Cheryl, could send it to Locks of Love, an organization in Lake Worth, Fla., that makes wigs and other hairpieces.

LOL then donates the wigs to children who have lost their hair because of cancer or cancer treatment.

Rolana Heidebrecht, at her salon, Pzazz, lopped off Silhan's four-year project.

David's grandmother and Cheryl's aunt died of cancer, and the couple recently lost a baby at birth. These were some of the reasons prompting their decision to make a gift of the hair.

"I wanted to give something back," said David Silhan.

One seldom hears of a male doing this. It is usually a girl who gives up her locks — for love, for this organization. According to an Internet Web site, Cheryl Silhan said, only about 3 percent of hair donors to the organization are males.

The hair was placed in a plastic bag, then enclosed in a bubble-wrap envelope/mailer, and was on its way to Florida.
