Margaret Wingerd

Margaret H. Wingerd, 94, well known for her many years of meeting the public at the IGA store in Marion, died April 21, 2003, at St. Luke Hospital.

Born Oct. 15, 1908, in the Lyona community of Dickinson County, she was the daughter of the late George and Augusta (Swenson) Ruhnke.

She had been a school teacher before helping her husband in the grocery business.

She and Kenneth Wingerd were married June 18, 1931.

A former member of Marion Cemetery Board and Marion City Library Board, she was a member of Valley United Methodist Church.

She also was frequently an election poll worker, where she enjoyed meeting people. She was a world traveler, having visited dozens of countries and taken some unusual tours over the years.

Her husband died Feb. 15, 1975. Survivors include their two sons, Gordon of Overland Park and Bruce of Clay Center; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Family graveside services were held today, Wednesday, at Marion Cemetery with the Rev. Vernon Bowers officiating.
