Marion girls extend winning streak to five

The Marion girls' basketball team nabbed two important Cottonwood Valley League wins this past week with victories over Wichita Independent and Wichita Trinity.

The Warriors rolled to a 59-40 win over Wichita Independent Friday night and the team upended Wichita Trinity 51-24 Tuesday night.

In their game against the Panthers on Friday, the Warriors used an early offensive burst in the first quarter to steam past their opponent.

In the first quarter, Marion rattled off 20 points, while holding Wichita Independent to 10.

In the second quarter, the Warriors strung together several solid offensive possessions to take a 36-20 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Warriors continued their domination in the second half, scoring 12 in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth, while holding the Panthers to 10 points in the each of the final two quarters. The 19-point victory marks the fifth consecutive win for the Warriors and extends the team's overall CVL record to 5-0.

The Marion team shot 42 percent from the field for the game and 28 percent from the free throw line.

Marion's Brandi Peterie-Shipman finished with a game-high 17 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Amy Tajchman complemented Peterie-Shipman's performance with 11 points, two rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Senior Emmy Bowers tossed in 10 points, while snagging eight rebounds and corralling two steals in the win.

Wichita Trinity

The Marion girls' basketball team held Wichita Trinity Academy to 24 points to defeat the team 51-24 Tuesday in Wichita.

The Warriors pounced on Trinity in the first quarter, running out to a 17-5 lead early on.

In the second quarter, the Marion defense remained resilient and held Trinity to just three points, while the MHS offense netted 18. At intermission, Marion led 35-8.

In the second half the quarter scoring totals would remain tight, but the Warrior lead remained consistent. Trinity outscored Marion 9-8 in the third quarter and Marion outscored Trinity 8-7 in the final quarter to claim the 27-point win.

The Warriors shot under 30 percent from the field for the game, but managed to shoot 79 percent from the foul line.

Brandi Peterie-Shipman recorded a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 boards in the Warrior win. The senior also added two steals. Tajchman finished with 10 points, four steals, an assist, and a rebound for Marion.

With the win Marion is 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the CVL.

defeats Trinity

In a victory over Wichita Trinity Academy the Marion girls' junior varsity basketball team shut down the Trinity offense, holding the team to two points in the first and fourth quarter respectively, to take home a 66-35 victory.

Early on in the game, the Warriors jumped out to a commanding 15-2 lead to close out the first quarter. The second quarter belonged to Trinity, who scored 17 points to the Warriors' 14. At half-time the Warriors led 29-19.

In the third quarter, the Marion offense exploded and scored 29 points, while Trinity managed 14. In the final quarter, Marion outscored Trinity, 8-2 to close out the game with a 29-point win.

Chelsi Carlson led the Marion team in scoring with 10 points, three rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists. Leanne Thomas and Emalee Versch added nine points and eight points respectively.
