Marion girls fall to Knights

In a rescheduled game Jan. 20 between two of the premiere Cottonwood Valley League girls' basketball teams, the Sacred Heart Knights got the better of the Marion Warriors, handing the team their first CVL loss of the year. The Knights defeated Marion, 56-47.

In the first quarter of play, the Warriors opened up the game scoring eight points, while Sacred Heart netted 13 to take a five-point advantage into the second quarter.

In the following quarter, the Warriors and Knights found their respective offenses scoring 16 and 18 points, respectively. At half-time, the Warriors trailed 31-24.

After intermission, the Warriors battled back and cut the once seven-point deficit to five points by the quarter's end. In the final quarter, the Knights held off the Marion advance, outscoring the Warriors 14-10, and coming away with a nine-point win.

The Warriors shot 34 percent from the field, 80 percent from beyond the arc, and hauled in 34 rebounds in the match-up.

The Marion offense was anchored by several players including Amy Tajchman, Emmy Bowers, and Toni Gordon. Tajchman finished with a team-high 11 points and nabbed two rebounds and a steal. Bowers and Gordon both finished with eight points. Bowers also added nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Gordon added an assist and a steal. Brandi Peterie-Shipman was just three points shy of a triple-double. The senior forward finished with seven points, 13 rebounds, and an assist in the loss.

With the loss, the Warriors are now 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the CVL. This week, the Warriors will do battle in the Berean Academy Tournament.
