If the Marion girls' basketball team was looking for momentum heading into yesterday's sub-state contest with Wichita Trinity Academy, they might have got it in their last two games.

The Warriors defeated the Council Grove Braves and the Chase County Bulldogs last Tuesday and Thursday night respectively to finish 10-2 in the Cottonwood Valley League and 14-6 overall.

Combining their win totals, Marion defeated the two teams 134-95.

In their most recent match-up vs. the Bulldogs, Marion's Brandi Shipman scored 26 points to help lead her team to a 62-46 win.

The game was neck-and-neck in the first quarter, with the Warriors taking an early one-point lead at the end of the quarter. But in the second, Marion scored 16 points to the Bulldogs' nine to take an eight-point lead.

After the intermission, the Bulldogs rallied. Both teams scored 16 in the third quarter.

Despite leading by just eight, the Warriors came through in the final stretch to come away with a 16-point win.

Shipman's game-high 26 points was complemented by Caitlyn O'Dell's 12 points and five rebounds.

Council Grove

The Warriors picked up their ninth win in the CVL last Tuesday night vs. Council Grove.

From the onset, Marion led 18-12 in the first quarter, but the second and third quarters proved to be the proverbial dagger for the Braves.

In the two quarters, Marion scored 25 and 20, to the Braves' 18-12. In the final quarter, Marion outscored Council Grove by two, 10-8.

Seniors Caitlyn O'Dell and Brandi Shipman paced the

Warrior offense with 15 and 14 points respectively.

Tuesday the Warriors hosted Wichita Trinity in the first round of the Class 3A sub-state tournament. Results from sub-state action will appear in next week's Marion County Record.
