Marion golfers take first at Hillsboro

The Marion golf team captured a first-place finish Friday afternoon at the Hillsboro Invitational Golf Tournament.

The Warriors recorded the lowest score on the afternoon beating the closest team by three with a total of 525.

Tandem Nickolas Hett and Nick Carlson combined for a 161 in the two-man competition to come in second in the event. Hett finished the afternoon with a 76 placing him third among the competitors. Carlson nabbed 10th place with an 85.

The Warriors finished fourth in the four-man competition with a score of 364.

Marion's effort at the Hillsboro tournament has head coach Doug Dick excited about the direction his athletes are headed.

"I still think we have a lot of work to do," Dick said. "We need to find some consistency. But I'm very pleased."

Last Tuesday, the Warriors competed in the Herington tournament.

The team finished in fourth place.

Hett finished six over par with a 78, which placed him in a three-way tie for fourth. He won the playoff with a birdie on the first hole of the playoff and sealed fourth place.

Hett and Carlson took home first-place honors in the two-man competition with a combined score of 165. Carlson finished with an 87.

Dusty Caldwell led the Centre golf team in individual scoring Friday at the Hillsboro golf tourney. He ended with a score of 82 to place eighth out of 66.

Other individual scores were Ryan Makovec, 91, Derek Belton, 92, Steve Hageberg, 96, Nathan Brunner, 113, and Joseph Stroda, 150.

A two-man team of Caldwell and Makovec scored 173 to place fourth out of 11 teams.

A four-man team of Belton, Hageberg, Brunner, and Stroda combined for 451 for 10th place.

The team placed 10th overall.
