Marion grapplers end season
Marion High School's 2002-03 wrestling season was great, according to wrestling coach Chad Adkins.
"This was our best year yet," said Adkins, who just finished his third season of coaching the young Warrior squad.
The season ended March 1 with the 3-2-1A State Tournament in Hays. Four MHS wrestlers — Chelsea Arnhold, Zac Ewert, Jordan Trapp, and Steven Boone — qualified for state competition, but none placed. Steven Boone, competing at state for his second time, missed medaling by one round, Adkins said.
Adkins complimented the four, and the entire wrestling squad, Monday night during the Marion-Florence USD 408 Board of Education meeting.
Adkins noted that Ewert, a senior, had a couple of tough draws at state, and said he would probably qualify for state in three sports during his senior year.
"Zac has more heart than two, three, four kids combined," Adkins said.
Speaking of Boone, a junior, Adkins said he was an aggressive wrestler who would be a big asset to the team again next year.
Trapp, also a junior, worked hard to get to state and had a couple of tough draws, Adkins noted. Arnhold, a sophomore and two time state qualifier, wrestled good, he said.
The MHS grapplers finished their season with 12 wins, five losses, and one tie even though the team had four open weight classes.
"I've been lucky enough to have a group that will do what you ask," Adkins told the school board.
Adkins said the squad's record continues to improve each year, and that most of the team members would be returning next year.
"We have a lot of middle school kids, and kid wrestlers coming up, so the future is bright," Adkins said.
He also complimented team managers seniors Allison Wegerer and Rhonny Bowers who "did all the dirty work."
"You can't replace them," Adkins said.
