Marion High School students to participate in Quest contest

A team representing Marion High School will participate Dec. 3 in the 2005-06 Quest academic competition at Washburn University, Topeka.

The contest, co-sponsored by KTWU public broadcast station and Washburn University, allows teams of high school students from across Kansas to compete against one another in answering questions on topics such as art, literature, history, math, and science.

Teams earning the top 16 scores will advance to the finals and return to Topeka several times for taping sessions.

The televised Quest competition will air on KTWU from February to May 2006.

Students representing Marion High School include seniors Michael Brookens and Rachel Davidson, juniors Isaac Guetersloh and Lee Ownbey, and freshman Matthew Thierolf. Doug Vogel is the coach.

MHS scholars take first

Saturday at Eureka meet

Marion High School varsity scholars' bowl team brought home first place Saturday from the Eureka/Babson quiz bowl.

Seniors Michael Brookens and Rachel Davidson, junior Isaac Guetersloh, and freshman Matt Thierolf posted a perfect 8-0 record.

In preliminary pool, Marion defeated Douglass II 75-30; Humboldt 40-10; Burlington 25-10; and Caney Valley 60-10. They defeated Wichita East 30-10 in quarter finals, Olpe 70-20 in semi-finals, and Northern Heights 70-50 in the finals.

Davidson led the scoring with 190 points, followed by Brookens with 160, Thierolf with 45, and Guetersloh with 35.

Their coach is Doug Vogel. The team's next competitions are Nov. 29 at Hesston and Dec. 1 at Sterling.
