Marion Kiwanis marks 80th year years ago

More than 80 members and guests of Marion Kiwanis Club celebrated the local organization's 80 years of service to the community at a banquet Monday evening in Holy Family Parish Hall.

Club president Mickey Lundy introduced guests and officials.

Four former Kiwanis District governors were present including past member of the Marion club Bill Wygle who now resides in Council Grove.

Interclubs were present from Council Grove, Council Grove Flint Hills, McPherson, McPherson Light Capital, Emporia, Emporia High Noon, and Hillsboro.

Keith Collett led the singing in traditional Marion club gusto. Shirley Bowers was the organist.

The Key Club charter ceremony, for Marion High School, was presented by Key Club Lt. Gov. Christy Carroll. Kylie Hardey is president of the local club.

Div. IV Lt. Gov. Feebie Holdeman made brief remarks as did District Governor Dot Leakey.

Bud Hannaford, former Marion club president and long time secretary, as well as former lieutenant governor, spoke on the club's history, interjecting humorous incidents to the delight of the audience.

Holdeman presented Legion of Honor certificates to Dr. E.K. Schroeder for 50 years of service and 25 year awards to Bud Hannaford and Gene Winkler.

Secretary Susan Cooper presented past secretary plaques to Hannaford, Bill Meyer, and Matt Newhouse who now resides in Iowa.

Past presidents were recognized by listed on the program. Roger Morse is longest tenure president, having served the club in 1950.

The Marion club was organized April 13, 1923 and chartered May 4, 1923. The local club is 80 and the national organization 88 years old.
