Marion Manor: School supply drive continues

By AUTUMN HANSON

Our school supplies drive still is underway. We are working with Valley United Methodist Church who gave us some names to add to our apple tree. We have only gotten a few supplies so far. Some of the residents have given money to purchase supplies for the children. Many residents enjoy watching the big yellow buses drive past the manor, and all enjoy the visits from school children.

Some of the staff still are recovering from Relay for Life this past week at Hillsboro. We had a great staff turnout for the walk. Some of the staff are cancer survivors. As I was walking, I couldn't help but think of some of our residents who have died from cancer. Some have gotten cancer while staying here and others come here for care during their illness. Some are successful in their fight, others are not.

The support from organizations such as American Cancer Society and Hospice Care of Kansas is wonderful.

We have been busy despite the hot weather outside. Many folks still enjoy sitting on the patio in the early morning and late afternoon. Many residents come inside with a flower from a plant tucked in a buttonhole or placed behind an ear.

We had our usual activities this week including bingo on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Volunteer Bill Schimpf called Wednesday's bingo for the residents.

We have been exercising in the mornings. Everyone enjoys a game of kickball to get the ol' motor running for the day.

Dick Pracht could not come for Bible study as he hurt his back doing yard work. Everyone hopes he soon is feeling better.

Marie Navrat came this week to say the rosary along with volunteer Pat Smith. Pat comes Fridays to say the rosary and also does nails. The residents look forward to their pampering and new colors of nail polish.

Red Hat Society ladies met for refreshments Thursday afternoon in the lounge. We read from a book Joy gave us. The ladies discussed having an area-wide Red Hat social the end of August or first of September.
