Marion musicians attend band camp

At least four students from Marion High School attended the High Plains Band Camp, July 10-16, at Fort Hays State University.

They were auditioned the first day for placement in various bands and ensembles.

Joel Zeiner was assigned to the Silver Jazz Band and the Honor Band.

Julia Zeiner played in a percussion ensemble and the Blue Band.

Michael Brookens was a member of the Silver Jazz Band, the Honor Band, and choir.

Bryce Nelson participated in the Honor Jazz Band and the Honor Band.

Workshops and clinics were conducted throughout the week, with conductors from all over the United States.

The groups performed every night during the weeklong event.

Janet Zeiner and other Zeiner family members, Bob and Anita Brookens, and Dwight and Julie Nelson attended Friday and Saturday performances.

"The performances were outstanding," Julie Nelson said. "They learned so much and had so much fun,"

Teams needed for softball tournament

Hillsboro Recreation Commission is hosting a co-ed slow pitch softball tournament Aug. 27-28 at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.

Entry fee is $110 per team and each team is guaranteed three games.

Tournament will be limited to 16 teams and entry deadline is Aug. 22. Each team must have 10 players to field a team with four women batting and in the field at all times.
