Marion native elected to family physicians board

Carol A. (Bowers) Johnson, MD, a Marion high school graduate, was recently elected president of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians (KAFP).

Prior to being elected president, Johnson served as secretary in 2000, vice president in 2001, and president-elect in 2002. She also had served on the academy's board of directors.

"One of the state's greatest treasures is the contribution family physicians make to the state of Kansas and the communities they serve," said Johnson when accepting her position as president. "The day to day, compassionate, comprehensive, cradle to grave, first contact care delivered by the family physicians in our state is incomparable and irreplaceable. Without family physicians, who would take care of Kansans?"

Johnson is a family physician from Bel Aire and a physician at Emergency Services of Kansas. She practices in hospital emergency departments in Dodge City, El Dorado, Newton, and Winfield.

She is currently working on a research project with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Johnson was previously the residency director for 11 years at Wesley Family Practice Center and served as a KU School of Medicine in Wichita faculty member for 21 years.

After graduating from Marion High School, Johnson received a degree from Kansas State University and earned her medical degree in 1977 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita.

Johnson's family includes her husband Mike and children, Caleb, David, and Becky. She is the daughter of Harold Bowers, Marion.

In addition to her practice, Johnson is involved in short-term medical missions, and has served at many sites throughout the world.
