Marion police apply for grant
A grant to help pay the cost of an additional police officer has been submitted, Chief David Mayfield said Monday at the Marion City Commission meeting.
The first round of applications are due May 24.
"I wanted mine in by May 1," he said. "They'll probably receive thousands of these."
The grant pays about 75 percent of an officer's salary and benefits over three years. Mayfield, who has served on a subcommittee making recommendations on these grants, said the city may not receive an answer until late this year.
