Marion runners take first, second
A Marion High School girl and boy took first and second places respectively in Cottonwood Valley League cross country action Thursday in Council Grove.
In the girls' competition, Jessica DeForest placed first in the league and second overall with a time of 13 minutes, 26 seconds.
In boys' cross country action, Marion's Zac Ewert placed second in the league and fourth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 48 seconds.
Head coach Matt Robert said the CVL tournament is unusual compared to some because there are so few competing that other schools are asked to send competitors.
The Marion girls' squad placed third overall in league action. Alissa Vogel received all league honors by placing sixth in league and eighth overall with a time of 14 minutes, 12 seconds.
Rounding out the girls' portion, Johanna Pape placed 11th, but her time was unavailable, followed by Tomi McLinden, 18th, 17:10; Haley Creamer, 20th, 17:41; and Briana Vogel, 22nd, 17:52.
On the boys' side, team member Brian Bina came in 10th in the league, 14th overall, with a time of 19:00, while Brandon Watson was 26th in the league, 33rd overall, with a time of 30:36.
"It's been a learning and growing season," Robert said.
Saturday, cross country runners travel to Bluestem in Leon for regional action.
"It will be tough, but we've trained hard so we're hopeful," Robert said.
