Marion school board plans retreat

The Board of Education of USD 408 will have a retreat from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Administration Building in Marion.

After a public hearing, the board approved the district budget for 2003-2004 at Monday night's regular meeting.

Vicki Box, of Florence, was approved for employment as a cook at Marion Elementary School, and JoAnn Helm as a food service aide at Marion High School.

The hiring of Pam Jones as a Title I aide/Bal-a-Vis-X (balance, auditory, vision and exercise) coordinator was approved.

Jerry Smith was approved for hiring as an assistant football coach, by a 5-2 vote, with board members Keith Collett and Chris Sprowls opposed.

Smith is a former coach, but has been a non-employee for more than 31 days, Gerald Henderson, superintendent, explained, so was again eligible for hiring by the district.

Paul Longhofer and Robert Vohs, both of Wichita, were approved as special education hearing officers, when and if needed.

District Business Manager and Board Clerk Martin Tice told the board a church has purchased one of the district's used school buses, and wants to buy another. Sale of both buses to the church was approved.

Also, Tice said, Randy Maltbie has offered $2,750 for a used Chevrolet Suburban belonging to the district, and he recommended acceptance of this bid, the better of two received. The board approved.
