Marion Seniors: Christmas spirit prevails
By JANET BRYANT
Senior center reporter
We have been so full of the Christmas spirit at the senior center that we wished we hadn't closed Friday. We heard several versions of "The Night Before Christmas," including one with a Swedish accent.
Marvin Hett was welcomed back to eat with us after nearly a month recuperating from a fall.
Henrietta Waner provided decorated Christmas cookies one day and brought her animated Santa on skis, which performed at the slightest cough or hand clap.
After our full penny jar was counted we had two winners. Harold Bowers guessed $24.26 and Lois Jost guessed $24.25. The jar held $25 in coins. Both got to choose prizes.
Elsie Reiswig created placemats for us using her computer skills. We mostly use decorated paper towels provided by those who eat here. I am now trained to look at paper towels in stores with an eye to design, not absorbency.
Wednesday after lunch Mary Ann Wiens gave a program on Christmas legends, some familiar, some not.
We celebrated Keith Holtsclaw's birthday Thursday and Keith and Norine Holtsclaw's 47th wedding anniversary.
We had a surprise (to him) program by June Jost, playing the French harp. His wife, Lois, brought in his harmonica and said, "He's playing today." We discovered Leonard Klassen singing along with the German song June played so he came up to the microphone to sing for all of us.
And yes, Elvis called this week. He will be at our senior center Jan. 7 to celebrate his birthday. (His actual birthday is Jan. 8). We are so excited. I have even found the scarf given to me by the Elvis impersonator who sang to me and picked me out of the audience during a show in Eureka Springs, Ark. Dig out your Elvis records and come on down.
