Marion streets may get facelift

Marion City Council approved a list of streets Monday that will be considered for construction or reconstruction.

The council instructed city administrator David Mayfield to rate or prioritize city streets to determine which streets needed immediate attention. After laboring over how to pay for the improvements and which streets to do, the council approved the list and instructed Mayfield to obtain bids.

Mayor Martin Tice reminded the council that its decision was to give direction to possible improvements and a dollar amount for a bond issue.

An estimate of $1.1 million was submitted several months ago by an engineer. If new street construction was approved for those streets with petitions for improvements, that would increase the estimated cost to $1.4 million. Currently there is $300,000 set aside in the city budget for street improvements.

Tice said that the cost amount needed to be determined but the project could be funded by increasing taxes, cutting funds for other projects, or through a bond issue.

Streets being considered for reconstruction are:

— Thorp — Main to Weldon.

— Highland — Cedar to Freeborn.

— Williams — Third to Fourth.

— Eisenhower — Main to Kellison.

— Nickerson — Lincoln to dead-end.

— Locust — Main to Lawrence.

— Walnut — Washington to city limits.

— North Cedar — Main to Sherman.

— Maple — Cedar to dead-end.

— Weldon — Coble to dead-end.

— South Cedar — Welch to Main.

— Water — First to Second.

— Fourth Street — Library to Main.

New construction of Country Club Drive and Fairway Drive in Country Club Heights Addition also will be considered.

When bids are collected, Tice said the council could approve or reject some or all of the street improvements on the list.
