Marion team finished fourth

A Marion girls' basketball team finished fourth in a double-elimination tournament held Saturday at Marion Elementary School gym. It was sponsored by the recreation commission.

Marion II team members were Veronica Freeby, Erika Riggs, Kimber Hardey, Liz Covarrubias, Jessica Timm, Christie Coleman, Jessica Leith, and Andria Pusateri. Coaches were Dean and Renae Pusateri.

They advanced to the consolation game.

A team from Junction City won the championship, defeating Abilene 31 to 27.

Members of Marion I were Audra Allen, Lanna Carroll, Ashley Dyar, Lauren Helmer, Katie Maag, Amanda Richmond, Tary Taylor, and Kristin Waner. Barry Allen and Bernie Waner were coaches.

Marion I defeated Marion II, 11 to 8. Scoring for Marion I were Waner, five; Allen, four; and Helmer, two. Scoring for Marion II were Freeby, Riggs, Hardey, and Coleman, two each.

Marion I fell to Abilene, 14 to 53. Helmer scored 12 and Dyar scored two. They also fell to Newton, 11 to 47. Waner scored five, Helmer four, and Dyar and Taylor, one each.

Marion II defeated Canton-Galva, 17 to 15. Freeby was leading scorer with nine, followed by Hardey, four, and Riggs and Timm, two each. The win put them in the consolation finals. They lost to Newton, 11 to 37. Freeby had four points, Riggs three, and Pusateri two.

Coaches said the tournament provided valuable experience to the Marion teams, which were comprised of fifth and sixth graders competing against sixth-grade teams.

Round robin

A team from Junction City won the fifth grade round-robin tournament Saturday at the high school gym.

Junction City I was undefeated with three wins. Junction City II had two wins and a loss. Abilene had one win and two losses. Newton had three losses.

Scores were, first round, Abilene, 9, Newton, 8; Junction I, 23, Junction II, 12; second round, Junction I, 47, Newton, 12; Junction II, 17, Abilene, 12; and third round, Junction II, 23, Newton, 13; and Junction I, 26, Abilene, 8.

Concessions at both gyms were provided by skate park organizers. Many other students and volunteers assisted as well.
