Marion team will be led by Bowers, O'Dell

After losing one of the best pitcher-catcher combinations in school history, you'd think the Marion girls' softball team would be worried about their strength at both positions for the upcoming season.

But according to head coach Charlotte Waner, depth on the mound and solid play at the plate are no longer an issue.

"As far as pitching goes, Leann Thomas, Kara Holt, and Sonya Steinborn will give us solid innings off the mound," Waner said. "We have a pretty deep pitching staff."

Junior Sarah Williams will take responsibilities behind the plate. Williams played most of last season on third base.

While the team adjusts to the loss of seniors Megan Moore, Krista Zogelman, and Heidi Zogelman, they also will look to two seniors to help propel them to a possible late-season run.

Two-time CVL first-teamer and three-year starter under Waner's watch, Emmy Bowers along with senior compadre Caitlin O'Dell will be the team's leaders, according to their coach.

Bowers, a short-stop known for her slugging ability, and O'Dell, a left fielder, will make an immediate impact this season Waner said.

"Emmy and Caitlin are very good leaders and all-around good players," Waner said. "They're both good motivators and they do a good job of encouraging girls."

The biggest question for the Warrior softballers is depth. Fielding just nine players on their roster, Waner said she's hoping her players remain healthy and open to many roles.

"Some girls are going to have to play at positions they haven't played before," Waner said. "I just hope the girls have fun, a winning season, and stay positive throughout the year."

The Warriors will open their season Friday night at home against the Hillsboro Trojans. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
