Community center and two-screen theater planned

Marion City Commission approved Monday support and participation in a grant for a community center and two-screen movie theater.
The city would administer the grant and serve as the pass-through agent for the grant money.
Gene Winkler, representing the Marion Advancement Campaign (MAC), spoke to the commission about the grant and project.
Winkler said a group of Marion residents are in the process of forming a non-profit foundation for this project and future projects. The paperwork for the 501c(3) status has been completed and submitted.
Land has been secured but Winkler could not divulge the location.
The proposed grant is a Kan-Step which is designed for community projects. Applicants may apply for up to 60 percent of the cost of the project, up to $400,000.
The remaining 40 percent will come from cash donations, in-kind services, and "sweat equity."
"We'll need lots of volunteers," said Winkler. Volunteer hours will go toward the 40 percent match.
The Burns community used the Kan-Step grant program to build its community building and Winkler thinks Marion can do the same thing.
"If a community the size of Burns can achieve this, so can we," said Winkler.
The grant will provide funds for land, building, and fixtures. The grant will not pay for equipment or furniture.
The facility cannot be used by the city or for municipal purposes.
The approximate cost of the building is $385,000. Approximate cost for the equipment and seating for the movie theater, and tables, chairs, and appliances for the community center is $150,000 to $175,000.
Winkler told the commission there will be a meeting March 15 in the city building basement. The meeting will gather together those interested in assisting with the project.
Eloise Mueller, mayor, said it was a good project.
"I like the Kan-Step program," said Mueller.
Commissioners authorized Winkler to apply for the grant. Winkler will serve as the contact person for the grant.
Winkler invites residents to participate and to share any ideas with him or any other foundation board member.
Foundation board members are Winkler, Mike Powers, Jeff Cady, Mickey Lundy, Jami Williams, and Susan Cooper.
