Marion VFW post sponsors two essay contests for students
Two essay contests are being sponsored by Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer Veterans of Foreign War Post 6958, Marion.
Contestants from USD 408 and home school students who reside within the district are being sought for the Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy contests.
Patriot's Pen
The theme for this year's Patriot's Pen contest is "Who are today's patriots?"
Contestants must be a student enrolled in the sixth, seventh, or eighth grade of a public, private, parochial school or a home study program.
A 300-400 word essay must be submitted by contestants by Nov. 1. Do not include any identification on the essays such as name, school, city, or state.
The local post and ladies auxiliary will award a $100 U.S. savings bond for first place, a $75 savings bond for second, and a $50 savings bond for third.
The winner of the local contest may then compete on a national level for an opportunity to receive a $10,000 U.S. savings bond.

Voice of Democracy
This year's theme is "How I demonstrate my freedom."
The contest is designed to foster patriotism and give high school students the opportunity to voice their opinions.
All entries must be on an acceptable quality standard size audiocassette or compact disk and accompanied by a typewritten essay. The recorded essay must be from three to five minutes long and be in the participant's voice.
No background sounds, music, sound effects, etc. are allowed.
Participants cannot identify themselves, their schools, cities or states within their written essays or recorded tapes.
Local contestants will receive $100 for first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third. Prize money is provided by the local post and the ladies auxiliary.
The deadline for entries is Nov. 1, or Marion High School office the morning of Nov. 2.
