Marion woman killed in freak accident

Georgie Vogel, 58, of Marion was fatally injured Monday in a freak accident at Martin Marietta Quarries north of Marion.

According to the Marion County sheriff's report, the 911 call came in at 10:58 a.m.

Sheriff Lee Becker said Vogel, weigh master at the quarry, was sitting at her desk in the scale office when a 2001 Chevrolet three-quarter ton truck driven by David D. Herb, 41, Council Grove, went out of control and slammed through the north wall of the building, pinning her.

Herb is a Martin Marietta employee and was driving a company truck.

Emergency services responded, and a high-loader owned by the company was used to pull the truck from the building.

Vogel was air-lifted by LifeTeam helicopter to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where she was pronounced dead.

Marion County Road and Bridge employees Don Berg and David Silhan also were in the office at the time of the accident. Both were treated for minor injuries at St. Luke Hospital and released.

Herb was transported by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, where he was treated for a medical condition which, according to the sheriff, is believed to have been the cause of his losing control of the vehicle.

Becker said the cause of the accident continues under investigation and authorities are awaiting word from the hospital as to the exact cause of death.

Funeral services for Vogel will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion.
