Martin Backhus
Martin Reinhard Backhus, 78, of Kansas City, Mo., died May 19, 2006.
Born Jan. 19, 1928, at Tampa, he was the son of Wilhalm and Martha Backhus.
Though his formal education was limited, he rose from helping on the family farm to assemblyman at General Motors, homebuilder with Merle Siler Construction and owning Magic Circle, his own tool and die business. In the 1960s, Martin and Roy Stout began S&K Industries in Lexington, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his former wife, Dolores; daughter, Terri; son, Gregory; five sisters, Mildred Bernhardt, Emma Paulson, Alice Yoachom, Ruth Taylor, and Lydia Evans; three brothers, Victor, Alvin, and Paul; and two grandsons.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday (today) at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Inurnment will be at Floral Hills East Cemetery at a later date.
