Marvin Phillips Sr.

Marvin Wayne Phillips Sr., 70, died April 24, 2006, at Wichita.

Born June 16, 1935, at Newton, he was the son of Oscar and Irene (Weigand) Phillips.

On Sept. 2, 1956, he married Sandra Cole. They later were divorced.

On Oct. 3, 2005, he married Mary Lou Skinner at Marion.

He worked in numerous mobile home industries in Newton and Halstead before starting his own Phillips Rental Properties in Newton and Marion. It was this business that allowed him to enjoy the many acquaintances he had made.

He also worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1990, after 23 years of service. He greatly enjoyed his work on the railroad and the camaraderie of his fellow employees.

He loved his weekend farm on the Cottonwood River at Elmdale. He also enjoyed fishing with his family and friends, creating laughter and many old fish stories.

He enjoyed boating on Marion County Lake, where he lived.

Later in life he enjoyed his farm at Goessel, gardening, and his horses. He loved his pets, but the most beloved was his black lab, Molly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepfather, Willard Knowles.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; daughter and son-in-law, Tamera and Roger Perkins; son, Marvin Phillips Jr., of Goessel; stepson, Tom Schaffer of Brighton, Md.; three stepdaughters, Linda Pyle of Towanda, Kim Kellum of Cabot, Ark., and Vickie Fine of Marion; grandchildren, Bill and Tawnya Frary, Kaylee, Sydney, and Taylor Perkins; great-grandchildren, Tahlia, Aliana, and Marah Frary; and 12 step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday morning at First United Presbyterian Church, Newton, with the Rev. James W. Anderson officiating.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.

Memorial funds have been established with Union Rescue Mission of Wichita, Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, and Harry Hynes Hospital.
