Mary Jane Deatrick

Mary Jane Deatrick, 101, Herington, died March 19, 2002, at the Lutheran Home, Herington.

Born Sept. 19, 1900, at Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of James and Mary Ann (McQuilkin) Blackim. She came to the United States with her parents March 10, 1911. They made their home in Marion. She moved to Herington in 1935, where she lived until her death.

Graveside services were held Monday afternoon at Marion Cemetery, with the Rev. Edward J. Thompson officiating.

Deatrick graduated from Marion High School with the class of 1921. She taught school in Marion County for four years, then worked in the Marion County Courthouse as deputy to the Marion County Superintendent of Schools for five years.

A member of the Herington United Methodist Church, she served on many organizations of the church, church circle, and the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of Chapter FC of P.E.O. and a past president. She was a 50-year member of Esther Chapter #96, OES; and worked with the Rainbow for Girls. She and her husband, Vern, both were honored with the Grand Cross of Colors by the State Rainbow for Girls.

She married Vern L. Deatrick Aug. 25, 1935, in the Presbyterian Church, Salina. He died Jan. 1, 1987. A son, David Blackim Deatrick, died in infancy. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, David F. Blackim, James Blackim Jr., and William Blackim; a sister, Anna Hein; and her parents.

Survivors include four nephews, David Blackim of Hutchinson, Charles Blackim of Salina, Allen Hein of Winfield and Robert Hein of Topeka; and many grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Memorial funds have been established with the Herington United Methodist Church and the First Presbyterian Church in Marion.
