Maurice Casey

Maurice Casey, 74, of Marion died Aug. 25, 2002, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born Hugh Maurice Casey on July 29, 1928, at Shattuck, Okla., he was the son of Hugh and Golda (Nine) Casey. He grew up around Neosho Rapids and Lebo, and attended area schools. During his youth he helped on the family farm and was on a harvest crew.

On June 7, 1955, he married Charlote Makovec at Strong City and made their home near Waverly.

From 1964 to 1968, the family lived in Gypsum, Colo., where they farmed and ranched and raised "Casey's Potatoes." Upon returning to Kansas, they settled on a farm in eastern Marion County and later moved to rural Chase County.

He continued to farm and raise cattle, all the while holding down numerous other jobs to support his family. He worked several years at the Dolly Madison Bakery in Emporia, was a pumper for an oil and gas company in Marion County, worked at the Herington Livestock sale barn, and delivered Daylight Donuts.

Casey was a good cowboy and enjoyed riding the pastures and working the cattle. Although it usually meant a long day of hard work, he looked forward to working alongside his neighbors and friends.

He enjoyed hunting coyotes with greyhound dogs, a hobby he learned from his father and passed onto his sons and friends. He enjoyed polka dancing and was a member of the Midwestern Polka Club and the Kansas Chapter of Po.Lk of A.

When he and Charlote moved to Marion in 1983, he frequented the coffee shops and convenience stores where he enjoyed visiting with everyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frankie Evans.

Survivors include his wife, Charlote of Marion; two sons, Gerald and his wife Betty, of Marion, and Larry and his wife Debra of Lincolnville; two daughters, Donna and husband Stan May, and Rhonda Carlson, all of Marion; two sisters, Golda Mae Freund of Lebo and Rosemary Winter of Greeley, Colo.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; other relatives; and a host of friends.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zeiner Funeral Home.
