Max Jackson Sr.

Former Marion businessman Max Guy Jackson, 82, was born Jan. 6, 1920, in Peabody. He died Dec. 12, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor, in Kansas City. Following cremation, his ashes will be buried at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.

Max was raised in Peabody and frequently assisted his grandfather, Hans Johnson, at the Townsend Ranch east of town, where Johnson worked as superintendent for 30 years. Max was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and graduated from Peabody High School.

He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army-Air Force during World War II and won several awards as a flight instructor. On Feb. 11, 1944, he married Patricia Potter of Peabody in Sequin, Texas.

Following discharge from the military, he settled in Marion to join his father in the clothing business and was active in community affairs.

He continued his interest in flying by owning several small airplanes with which he flew friends and relatives throughout the nation. Other interests included golf and frequent fishing at the Marion lakes, Colorado, and Canada.

He was noted for his ability as a story teller, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club. Marion Country Club and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

In his later years, he lived in Sedona and Cottonwood, Ariz., where he sold real estate until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy H. Jackson, and his mother, Martha R. Johnson.

He is survived by his children, Max G. Jackson Jr., and his wife Pam, and grandchildren Ethan and Lydia of Leawood; George S. Jackson and his wife Jeanette, and grandchildren Ben and Abe of Boise, Idaho; Helen Jackson and her husband Tim Nicholson, and grandchild Keith of Yuba City, Calif.; Roger W. Jackson and his wife Sandy, and grandchildren Stacy and Devin of Topeka.
